In the academic world, English has become the de facto language of communication. With this in mind, the Academic Reading and Writing course has been designed to provide the means and opportunity to examine selected texts written by well-known scientists in the target language and to practice two types of writing assignments that are commonly given at college: an annotated bibliography and a literature review. Main activities, based on collaborative learning and the integrated approach to language skills, include reading and examination of academic material, writing formal and academic papers, pair/group discussions, (in)formal presentations/debates, and peer teaching. Students are expected to use English only.
You will not receive a letter grade for this course. Instead you will be awarded either satisfactory, for having met all the requirements of the course, or unsatisfactory, for failing to complete all assessments or for work that is below the minimum standard on any assessment as described in the relevant task guidelines.
You will get scores for your attendance, participation, quizzes, tests, and other assignments. These will be scored on a 0-100 point scale. At the end of the semester, you will need to have an overall score of 75 or above to pass the class.
